In fact, it still has the Spencer Gifts price tag still attached to the hat. The tag on this 100% cotton hat says that it is. Here's a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1997 by Ed Norris, this lot contains items from the "NEW" MAD Panic fanzine. Back in 1997 the "new" MAD Magazine (#356) was published with much fanfare and promotion. The editor of the MAD Panic fanzine, Ed Norris, decided to join the bandwagon, and release his "new" version of his MAD Panic fanzine. Well, it was just a gag, and was just a single sheet of paper folded into eighths. When unfolded, there was a copy of a Jack Davis cover rough on one side, and an editorial by Mr. Norris on the other. The "new" fanzine was mailed with a MAD Minute cassette tape, which was generously provided by Annie Gaines. The tape contains episode numbers 35 and 54. Here's a cool piece of foreign MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in the 1970's for Stiko-Sweden, this is a Swedish Alfred E. Neuman ceramic bust. This bust is very similar to the version that was sold in the United States in the 1960's, and I believe that the bust is cast from the original mold of the US version (or at least a one-off). It stands approx. 5" tall, and the base is glazed a light brown rather than gray. There is no felt on the bottom, as there was never any felt to begin with. Overall, this bust is beautiful, and in Near Mint condition.

Price realized: $180

Lot #29 - MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman Halloween Costume w/ Original Box 1960 MB $650

Here’s one of MAD Magazine collecting’s “Holy Grails”. Produced in 1960 by Collegeville Costumes, this is a child’s Large size Alfred E. Neuman Halloween costume. The components to the costume include a plastic Alfred E. Neuman mask, a black pseudo-tuxedo top, and a pair of generic orange pants. The mask is generally known as the easiest component to find, but to find all three pieces together is a rarity. And, the best part about this is the existence of the original storage box for the costume. The box is just a generic Collegeville costume box, but it has the “MAD - What Me Worry” stamped in the label space on the box. The box is a little mis-shapen and has a little tear in the cellophane on the lid, and the Alfred mask is a little bit squished. But, everything is there, and is waiting for you to give it a good home.

This item is the first licensed food item from MAD Magazine. Produced in 1993 by Berzerk Candy Werks (a division of Kraft Foods), this item is a full display box from the line of MAD Idiotic Fruity Candy. MAD candy was sold mainly in convenience stores back in 1993 and 1994, but it wasn't a very good seller. The cool thing about the boxes of MAD candy is that it had a special promotional mini-issue of MAD Magazine attached to the box. Featuring artwork by Dave Berg, Bob Clarke and Jack Davis (among others), this item was probably the best thing about the candy. This item is in beautiful display condition, all 24 of the boxes of candy are still factory sealed.

This belt is one of several pieces of MAD Magazine memorabilia produced for sale at the Warner Brothers Studios Stores, with others being a denim jacket, a sweatshirt, a metal money clip, a statue, a puzzle, and a wristwatch, just to name a few. This belt is unused, and is in Excellent display condition.

Lot #33 - Alfred E Neuman Metal Ring w/ Pre-MAD Alfred E Neuman Image MB $10

Here's a cool piece of Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Produced in the early 1990's, this is an Alfred E. Neuman metal ring. The image used for this item is considered a pre-MAD image of Alfred E. Neuamn, although this item is not that old. I can recall walking through the Chicago Toy Show and seeing a vendor (who also sold these in Toy Shop magazine) selling these for $10 each. And, he had a box full of them. A companion money clip was also produced, but with a different image than the one shown. This item appears to be unused, and is in Excellent display condition.

Here's a cool piece of "pre-MAD" / Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Produced in the 1950's, this item is a ceramic ashtray, featuring a pre-MAD image of Alfred E. Neuman. This image was copied from the popular plastic postcard by Eden Plastics, that featured the exact same image and quotation. This ashtray measures approx. 3 3/4" by 3 3/4", and is in Excellent display condition. There is a tiny bit of loss on the gold trim, and perhaps a few light surface scratches. There is also an old price sticker on the bottom. This item is very hard to find, and is in beautiful display condition.

Here's a super rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 2013 by E.C. Publications, this is issue #521 of MAD Magazine. However, this particular issue is a rarity, as it contains a "controversial" Fold-In by Al Jaffee. The original Fold-In for this issue (as pictured) was replaced due to assumed sensitivity issues around the 2012 Aurora, Colorado theater shooting. However, some feel that it was pulled by DC to protect their brand, as the shooting occurred at a theater showing a midnight screening of the Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Lot #196 - “Pre-MAD” Alfred E. Neuman Peeing Outhouse Plastic Toy Figure MB $5

Here’s a neat piece of Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Probably produced in the 1960’s, this item is a plastic toy that simulates a kid peeing inside of an outhouse. Back in the 1990’s, this toy became hugely popular with MAD Magazine memorabilia collectors because the face on the plastic figure bears a strong resemblance to Effanbee’s “Happy Boy” doll, and the Japanese “Happy Chap” doll. Some MAD collectors collect those Alfred E. Neuman variant dolls, and while I do not, this toy is right up their alley. I have not tested it to see if it works, but it is still in Excellent display condition.

This survey was stapled into MAD Magazine #326, and it was up to the reader to detach it, fill it out, and send it in. The response was overwhelming, and far surpassed any expectations that the MAD Editorial Staff had. In fact, to find an issue of MAD Magazine #326 with the survey intact is quite a rarity. Also included in the Alfred E. Neuman cloisonne pin that was given to each survey respondent. It is unused, and in Mint condition. The original mailing envelope is also included.

Lot #219 - Alfred E. Neuman Original B/W Portrait MAD Magazine #27 RARE MB $600

Here’s an incredibly rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1956 by E.C. Publications, this is the first ever MAD Magazine mail-away premium, the b/w Alfred E. Neuman portrait. This item was only offered for sale in issue #27 of MAD Magazine, and not ever again. The advertisement for it appeared on the inside back cover of the issue, and it was offered for sale for just 15 cents. The original portrait measured 5” by 7”. But, this one has been trimmed to a size of 4 ¾" by 6 5/8”. It is printed on cardstock, and has browned a little bit over the years. The back shows a little of paper loss at the top, probably from when a piece of tape was removed from hanging. I would guess there are probably less than ten (10) of these in collections today. The opening bid reflects the scarcity of this item.

Lot #220 – Quebec / French Canadian MAD Magazine #1 First, Premiere Issue 1991 MB $40

This issue is in VG condition, with surface, corner and edge wear, and some light wear along the spine. There are also some light creases near the right hand corner of the front cover. This is a super rare foreign MAD Magazine first issue. Published in 1994 by Modan Publishing, this is the first, premiere, #1 issue from the Israeli / Hebrew version of MAD Magazine. This issue is about a 50/50 split in terms of reprints from the US MAD vs. original contributions from Hebrew artists and writers. This particular issue is also unique, as you need to turn the pages from left to right (the spine is on the right hand side of the magazine). This issue is in G/VG condition, with surface, corner and edge wear, with light wear along the spine, and some light creasing along the bottom edge and lower left corner of the front cover.

Lot #223 - Soda Net Newsletter Set Of Two (2) Different Pre-MAD Alfred E. Neuman MB $10

Here’s an obscure piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 1992 and 1999 by the PSBCA (Painted Soda Bottle Collectors Association), this lot contains two (2) different issues of Soda Net. Soda Net was a monthly (or bi-monthly) newsletter put out by the PSBCA for its members. It contained articles about painted soda bottle collecting, new finds of rare and hard to find bottles, a listing of shows and events, and much more. This newsletter is of interest to MAD Magazine memorabilia collectors as it contains articles about the Happy Jack soda bottle, which has an early pre-MAD image of Alfred E. Neuman on it. The bottle itself is incredibly rare, and I count myself lucky to have actually seen and held one (probably the only one known in a MAD Magazine memorabilia collection). In any case, these issues are in Excellent display condition, with storage and handling wear.

Publications, this lot contains a pair of plastic MAD Magazine bookends (gold version) and an ultra-rare MAD Magazine paper bookmark. Originally, this bookmark/bookend set was shrinkwrapped with a collection of MAD paperback books, and since there was no box or sleeve, MAD could wrap whichever books they wanted into the set. For the items pictured above, you will receive just the pair of plastic bookends and the paper bookmark. The books are not included. Both the bookends and bookmark are in Excellent display condition, with storage and handling wear.

Lot #225 - Set Of Five (5) MAD Magazine First Day Covers Ed Norris 1990’s MB $25

Here’s a unique collection of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in the 1990’s by Ed Norris and the US Postal Service, this is a collection of five (5) different MAD Magazine First Day Cover postal cachets. A First Day Cover (FDC) is an envelope or card bearing a stamp which is cancelled on the day the stamp is initially placed on sale by the postal authorities. A cachet is an envelope with printed art that tells something about the stamp. In this case, Mr. Norris used a piece of MAD art for each of the five different stamps that were released: a series of multi-colored Alfred E. Neuman portraits for the Andy Warhol stamp, a chained and padlocked trunk for the Houdini stamp, etc. All five cachet envelopes are individually sealed with a cardboard backer board, and are unused and in Mint condition.

Produced in 1994, 1995, and 1997 by MAD Magazine memorabilia collector, Michael Lerner, this lot contains two (2) different MAD Magazine memorabilia auction catalogs, a MAD Magazine memorabilia set sale catalog, and a MAD auction announcement postcard. This collection of MAD auction catalogs once belonged to former MAD Magazine memorabilia collector, Ed Norris, and his address label is on the back of each of item, except for the 1994 sales catalog. These items appear to have been looked at just a few times, and are in Excellent display condition.

Lot #227 - MAD Magazine / Sergio Aragones “Books On Tape” RARE MB $30

Here’s a super rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in the 1990’s by Flabby Roads Studio and Nick Meglin, this is a set of two (2) different MAD Magazine “Books On Tape”. These cassette tapes were the brainchild of the longtime MAD Magazine editor, Mr. Nick Meglin, but they were never sold or marketed. They are parodies of “books on tape” cassettes that were hugely popular at the time, and my take is that they were gag gifts to the MAD staffers. These tapes are blank, because as any fan of Sergio Aragones knows, there is no printed text in any of his MAD books, which means that there are no words to read. That’s the joke. These tapes appear to be unused, and are in Excellent display condition.

Lot #228 - 1960 MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman For President Campaign Kit RARE MB $500

Here's a super rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1960 by E.C. Publications, this lot contains all of the items from the 1960 Alfred E. Neuman for President campaign kit. The 1960 Alfred E. Neuman campaign kit was sold through the pages of MAD Magazine, and is the most difficult of any of the Alfred E. Neuman for President campaign kits to find. This lot contains a poster, a pinback button, a door sign, a day-glo bumper sticker, and a painters hat. The painters hat is the key piece to this collection, as it is almost never seen. All of the pieces are very displayable, although the hat shows some light staining on the front and brim. But, that shouldn’t even be an issue, because it’s THE HAT!!! The opening bid reflects the completeness of this collection, but more importantly, the existence of THE HAT!!! The original envelope is not included.

The books appear to have been read just once or twice, while the "garbage bag" shows storage and handling wear. There is also a small tear near the top of the bag. This is the closest thing you'll see to a foreign MAD Magazine paperback boxed set, and it would be a huge addition to any foreign MAD Magazine collection.

These pictures depict Mr. Woodbridge climbing a brick wall, shooting a gun, and sitting on a lawn chair. The smallest of these photos measures approx. 3” by 3”, so that should give you an idea of the size of the rest. All of the photos are in Excellent display condition, except for the “lawn chair” photo, which shows a corner crease. They also have name identification writing on the back.
