There are three (3) different Don Martin books, and three (3) different Spy vs. Spy books. These books are extremely rare, even in Brazil, as the heat and humidity of the region often caused these books to fall apart quite quickly. These books are complete, but most have small flaws like edge and corner chipping, foxing, bookstore stamps and page browning. To say you have a complete set of these (which these are) is quite an achievement. Lastly, these books are not paperback bound like the US MAD paperbacks. Rather, they appear to be a smaller size version of a MAD Magazine, kind of like a thinner version of an older TV Guide. In any case, these are extremely difficult to find.

Normally, it is relatively difficult to find this issue in Germany, and nearly impossible to find here in the US. But, this issue will command even more attention, as it has been signed on the front cover by fourteen (14) members of the Usual Gang of Idiots. All of the signatures were obtained during the 1980 MAD Trip to Germany, and the following signatures are included: Angelo Torres, Lou Silverstone, Dick DeBartolo, Sergio Aragones (w/ picture), Paul Peter Porges, Bob Jones, George Woodbridge, Dave Berg, Nick Meglin, Bob Clarke, Don Martin, Frank Jacobs, Harry North, and Jack Davis. The issue itself has seen better days, as it has significant surface, edge and corner wear. There are corner creases on the front cover, and there is tape along the entire edge of the spine. The signatures have not been affected, however Dave Berg's signature appears to have been "rubbed" a little bit. Overall, this is a fantastic collection of MAD / UGOI signatures, so don't miss out!

Neuman campaign kit (minus the t-shirt), which will also be auctioned off this weekend (see Lot #84). It looks like this advertisement was taken from the National Enquirer, as the articles appear with the text font that the Enquirer used back in the day. A piece has been clipped from the bottom of the page, so I suspect that the name of the magazine and issue number were once printed there. This item measures approx. 9 1/2" by 12 1/2" (folded), and is in Excellent display condition. There is a 1" tear along one of the edges, but it does not affect any of the advertisement at all.

Lot #79 - Denmark / Danish MAD Magazine #1 First, Premiere, Issue 1962 MB $25

This is a very cool (and very rare) foreign MAD Magazine first issue. Published in 1962 by Forlaget I.K. / Williams Forlag, this is the first, premiere, #1 issue from the Danish version of MAD Magazine. What makes this issue extra special is that the title is spelled "G-A-S", instead of "M-A-D". That is because the word "GAS" is the literal translation of the word "MAD" in the Danish language. In fact, the first thirteen (13) issues of the Danish MAD had the word "GAS" printed on the front cover, as the title was slowly converted to read "MAD" instead. This issue is in Fair / Good condition, with surface, corner and edge wear. The cover has the most wear, with edge chipping, tiny tears along several places, a small piece missing from the upper corner, and some holes and paper loss on the back cover. While not in the best condition, this is one of the toughest foreign #1 issues of MAD to locate, so don't miss out!

Here's a super rare piece of pre-MAD Magazine Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Probably produced in the 1940's, this item is a storage box from the Happy Jack beverage company. Featuring an early, pre-MAD image of MAD Magazine's Alfred E. Neuman on the front, this item is probably the last of its kind. It measures approx. 9 3/4" tall by 7 1/2" wide by 1 3/4" deep, and features six (6) hooks on the inside. This item is dusty and dirty, with paint flaking off on the edges, and dirt caked on to the top of the lid. The latch closure is rusty, and the hinges are also rusty, with one of the hinges starting to seperate from the box. This item is still quite sturdy and solid, but needs a little TLC, in the cleaning department, anyway. But, I don't know if I would clean it, as I think the appearance adds to the charm of the item.

This is a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1974 by United Artists Music & Records Group Inc., this item is a store display poster for an album from the rock group, MAN. The cover to this album is important to MAD Magazine memorabilia collectors, as the group borrowed the MAD Magazine logo font for their name on the album sleeve, and also used the mouth (pictured) of Alfred E. Neuman on the album cover. This final version was originally the group's second choice for the album cover. The first choice was a complete face and body of Alfred E. Neuman, a choice that was emphatically denied by MAD's lawyers. Measuring approx. 23 1/4" by 34", this poster is in Excellent display condition, with light storage and handling wear.

Lot #98 - MAD Magazine / Alternatives To Dave Berg's "The Lighter Side Of..." Letter MB $5

Here's a super rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Written on May 31, 1996, this is a copy of a letter that was penned by former MAD Magazine editors John Ficarra and Nick Meglin and sent to Jenette Kahn, the president and editor-in-chief of MAD. The gist of this letter is quite shocking, as it outlines a few different scenarios in which MAD Magazine artist, Dave Berg, would get replaced. I will not disclose all of the gory details with you, but it is safe to say that Ms. Kahn was actively looking to replace Mr. Berg, and fast. Just a few months later, the "NEW" MAD was born, with new features like Monroe and Melvin & Jenkins, a new slanted MAD logo, and less Dave Berg. This item is an original 2-page copy, and is in Excellent display condition, with a lightly rusted staple.

The top photo (color) includes almost every member of the Usual Gang of Idiots (with their spouses), posing on the deck of the cruise ship. This photo has been incorrectly labeled (by Duck Edwing) as Bill and Annie Gaines' first anniversary photo, but I have since learned (with help from Annie Gaines) that this was from the 1991 MAD Cruise. The second group of photos (b/w) were taken at Don Martin's house in Miami in 1981, and includes seperate candid photos of the MAD Men. All of the photos have been attached to a sheet of heavy construction paper, and Mr. Edwing has added a few liner note to the page. Lot #101 - Alfred E. Neuman Flocked Blacklight Poster Late 1960's MB $15

Here's a cool piece of Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Produced in the late 1960's by AA Sales, Inc. out of Seattle, this is an Alfred E. Neuman flocked (cloth) blacklight poster. This poster features a color pre-MAD image of Alfred E. Neuman, and this poster uses the copyrighted image that was owned by Stuff & Wilson. If you recall, this image was part of a copyright infringement case against MAD in the 1960's, by the wife of Mr. Stuff. The case was overturned, as it was discovered that Mrs. Stuff failed to protect the copyright of Alfred's image when other publishers tried to borrow or use the image. There were two different sizes of this poster that were produced, and this is the smaller of the two, measuring in at approx. 11" by 17". It is in terrific display condition, although there is a small piece of tape on one corner, and a small 1" piece missing from another.

This item is the first licensed food item from MAD Magazine. Produced in 1993 by Berzerk Candy Werks (a division of Kraft Foods), this item is an empty display box from the line of MAD Idiotic Fruity Candy. MAD candy was sold mainly in convenience stores back in 1993 and 1994, but it wasn't a very good seller. The cool thing about the boxes of MAD candy is that it had a special promotional mini-issue of MAD Magazine attached to the box. Featuring artwork by Dave Berg, Bob Clarke and Jack Davis (among others), this item was probably the best thing about the candy. This item is in beautiful display condition, although one of the inside "fold" seams has split. From the collection of Annie Gaines Ashton.

Lot #117 - M, A, D Printers Block Letters Gift To Annie Gaines MB $25

Here's an oddball piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Probably produced in the 1930's or 1940's, this is a set of three (3) wooden printing blocks. But, each block has a letter attached to it: one has an "M". one has an "A", and one has a "D". So, you are able to spell out the word "MAD". I was super excited to see these when I got the box of consignment items for my auction, and I initially hoped they were the original typesetting blocks for MAD Comic #16. But, I learned that the cover to MAD #16 was all pasted-up text, and the blocks were actually a Christmas gift to Annie Gaines from her father, who found them one year at a flea market. In any case, they are very cool, and are in terrific display condition. They are all 4" in height, with varying widths. From the collection of Annie Gaines Ashton.

It was sculpted and cast by artist, Bob Hendrix, who added his name on the back of Alfred's left shoulder. This item measures approx. 7" by 9", and is in Excellent display condition. The UGOI who consigned this would have liked a little more detail in Alfred's face, and I would tend to agree. But, it is still a very cool display item.

This beauty is a monster, and measures approx. 30" by 45". It is too big to frame is a movie poster frame, but you could simply mount it on a piece of foamcore, and it would display beautifully. The "light green" hue to the poster in the pictures is actually a large piece of glass that I laid on top of the poster to lay it flat, and the background of the poster is actually white. This particular statue, however, is a real treasure. The detail is tight, from the pupils in Alfred's eyes to the creases and wrinkles in his hands. Standing at approx. 14 7/8" in height, this statue is slightly taller than the one sold at the Warner Bros. store. It is marked "D.C. Master" on the bottom, and has a 1993 copyright date stamped into the back of the base. It is in beautiful display condition. Lot #148 - MAD Magazine / Donald Trump Decorated Cookie MAD #540 MB $10

Here's a cool (and very RARE) piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 2017 for E.C. Publications by Tiffany's Sweet Spot, this is an actual edible decorated cookie, featuring the POTUS, Donald Trump. This image appears as the cover of MAD Magazine #540, and this cookie was sold in limited quantities at the 2017 San Diego Comic Con (Comicon International). The cookie appears blurry in the picture because that's how it actually looks. The previous owner (a UGOI) failed to freeze it after they got home from the convention, thereby allowing the sugar design on the cookie to bleed/fade/melt. It has been in my freezer since I have received it, ensuring it's continued survival. A recent call to Tiffany's Sweet Spot, wondering if there were more for sale, came back with a "No Go". Apparently, these were a very limited product, and DC has chosen not to allow Tiffany's to make any more of them. Measuring approx. 2 3/8" by 3 5/8", this just might be the last one in existence, as the others were probably eaten at the con. Photo #3 is simply a stock photo, showing what the cookie probably looked like when it was freshly made.
