- The majority of the items in this auction come from the collections of some very important former staff members of MAD Magazine: Annie Gaines Ashton, Diane Meglin, whose father, Nick, was with MAD from the very beginning, and retired as Co-Editor of MAD, former Senior Editor Charlie Kadau, former Editor John Ficarra, and two MAD contributors who wish to remain anonymous. It has been both an honor and a privilege working with everyone, and I am again truly amazed at what fantastic MAD Magazine memorabilia they come up with. And, I wish to thank MAD Magazine artist, Tom Richmond for creating the excellent cover artwork for this auction catalog. The cover art was inspired by an old Frank Zappa album cover, and the "Cream Of The Crap" title was previously used by Robert Solomon, a long time MAD memorabilia collector who produced a sales catalog with the same title.

Good Luck, and Happy Bidding!

MADly,

Tim Johnson

However, some feel that it was pulled by DC to protect their brand, as the shooting occurred at a theater showing a midnight screening of the Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Says the consignor, "Since it was subsequently printed in a 2019 issue, the initial pulling of it seems like it was more a business/timing matter, rather than anything having to do with taste or sensitivity issues on management's part." This bust is very similar to the version that was sold in the United States in the 1960's, and I believe that the bust is cast from the original mold of the US version (or at least a one-off). Lot #97 - Denmark / Danish MAD Magazine Bound Volume Includes First, #1 Issue MB $175

This is a very cool (and very rare) piece of foreign MAD Magazine memorabilia. Compiled in 1963 by Forlaget I.K. / Williams Forlag, this is a bound volume of the first eight (8) issues of the Danish version of MAD Magazine. These issues all have the title "G-A-S", instead of "M-A-D". That is because the word "GAS" is the literal translation of the word "MAD" in the Danish language. In fact, the first thirteen (13) issues of the Danish MAD had the word "GAS" printed on the front cover, as the title was slowly converted to read "MAD" instead. This item is in Excellent display condition, although the guts to issue #7 (1963 / #3) is missing.

The pins are virtually identical, except for the words, “Happy Medium” printed on the Chicago pin, The metal tab on the New York pin is a little longer as well. Lot #103 - 1940’s Era Adult Dress Shirt w/ Pre-MAD Alfred E. Neuman Image Cool MB $150

Here’s a cool piece of pre-MAD Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Probably produced in the 2000’s, this is an Adult Mens dress shirt. This shirt features several images of an early version of MAD Magazine’s Alfred E. Neuman, and is very well done. I cannot say for sure if this is an authentic shirt from the 1940’s, or a recent reproduction. It certainly has the look and feel of a piece of 40’s era clothing, and the tag looks legit. But it is in such nice condition, that it is hard to believe this shirt is going on 80 years old. Perhaps it is new-old-stock (N.O.S.)? I can’t say for sure. I will say that it nearly took my breath away when I opened the box from the consignor. Although the tag only indicates the neck size, I would guess that this is an Adult size Large.

Price realized: $380

Lot #104 - MAD Magazine T-shirt It’s A Jungle Out There CIA 1987 MB $20

This is a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1987 by CIA, this item is a MAD Magazine t-shirt. The graphic on the shirt is taken from the cover art to MAD Magazine issue #102, and features an orangutan with his finger in the barrel of a gun held by Alfred E. Neuman. There is no tag, but I would guess it is an Adult size Medium. It is made from a thinner, more lightweight fabric, and is in Excellent display condition. It has been worn and washed several times, and it is starting to show some light pilling. But, the colors are still bright, and the graphics are clear. This is a tough one to find, so don;t miss out!

The front features the popular 1930’s and 1940’s version of MAD Magazine’s cover boy, while the inside shows several lines of a verse, entitled, “LIFE”. This item is in wonderful display condition considering its age, although there is some writing in blue pen on the inside, above the printed verse, and also some pencil writing on the back. The is also a horizontal crease that starts 1 ½” from the bottom edge. Of all of the hundreds of pre-MAD images in existence, this is the first example I’ve seen of this particular piece.

Here’s a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1965 by the Aurora Plastics Corp., this is their Kit #802, the Alfred E. Neuman model. Initially, this was not a very good seller, as this kit was released with a legion of monster model and superhero kits (Munsters Living Room, Addams Family Haunted House, Batman), that were the rage at the time. A Chicago toy dealer remembers seeing cases of sealed Alfred E. Neuman kits in a warehouse, and purchasing those same kits for $1.00 each. Now, sealed kits can be found, but for a few hundred dollars each. The kit is this auction is almost complete, but it is missing the signs. It appears that all of the pieces are assembled, and just have to be glued together and painted. There is some damage to the box (pictured), but for those of you who don’t own one of these, the starting bid is well worth it.

Lot #110 - Alfred E. Neuman Fishing Lure Unauthorized 2000’s MB $5

Here’s a neat piece of Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Probably produced in the 2000’s by Green Bay Lure Engineering, this is an Alfred E. Neuman spinner fishing lure. Alfred E. Neuman is shown prominently on the blade of the lure, and just on the top side. This lure is designed to catch medium sized fish, like Walleye, Trout, and Bass, as it is too big for fish like Perch or Bluegill, and too small for fish like Muskies. The bottom of the lure has a 3-hook attachment, but one of the hooks has popped through the plastic covering. This item is unused, and is still factory sealed (except for the protruding hook).

Lot 119 - Pre-MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman B/W Glossy Photo Northwest Ignition MB $15

Here’s a super cool piece of Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Probably produced in the 1940’s, this is an early advertising photo of MAD Magazine’s mascot. In this instance, the face has been used to advertise the Northwest Ignition and Radiator Service, out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While the image is familiar and has been seen in advertisements for other companies, this is the first time I have seen this image used for this company. And, its larger format makes it extra desirable. Measuring approx. 7 ½” by 9 ⅞”, this item shows considerable wear. There are creases throughout, and pinholes at the corners. There’s a small piece missing from the lower left hand corner, and some of the creases have been reinforced with masking tape on the back. While this item is not in Mint condition, it is still very displayable, despite its “patina”. In the middle photo, the yellow spots at the top of the picture is camera glare, and nothing else.

Lot 125 - Pre-MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman Female Version Card Stock Poster MB $35

Here’s a super rare piece of Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Probably produced in the 1940’s, this is an early advertising piece that features a female version of MAD Magazine’s mascot, Alfred E. Neuman. This piece is an advertising poster for Bill Kroening Signs, out of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and while I have seen a female pre-MAD Alfred with pigtails (on a postcard), this is the first time I have seen this image used on a large format advertisement. Measuring approx. 8” by 9 ⅝””, this item has been printed on heavy card stock (like a comic backer board), and is in Near Mint condition, with light storage and handling wear, and a tiny little “ding” near the top left corner. This is a rare one folks, so don’t miss out!

This stationery sheet (from the 485 Madison Avenue offices) was cut in half, and the top half was signed by Mr. DeBartolo. Lot #127 - MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman For President T-Shirt Stanley Desantis 1992 MB $15

Here’s a cool MAD Magazine t-shirt. Produced in 1992 by Stanley Desantis, this is a MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman for President t-shirt. The art on the shirt features the cover art to MAD Magazine #185, and shows Alfred E. Neuman’s head sticking out of a campaign sign. There is no tag attached to this shirt, but it appears to be an Adult size Large. The previous owner of this shirt must have really liked it, as it shows heavy wear and usage. There is significant wear and fading to the image on the front, due to a combination of washing and general wear. Upon closer inspection, there are no holes, rips, or tears, so the shirt is complete. If you’re in the market for a MAD Magazine t-shirt with a “lived-in” look, then this one’s for you!

Here’s a cool piece of Alfred E. Neuman clothing. Manufactured in the 2000’s by Fidel!, this is a ladies zippered sweater. This item features a modified version of Alfred E. Neuman in a beret on the front, and the same image graces the necktag on the inside. This is definitely an unlicensed item, but is well done, and is a Ladies size 10. It appears to be lightly used, if used at all, and is in Excellent display condition.

Lot #131 - Coronet Magazine w/ MAD Magazine Article 1960 MB $5

Here’s a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 1960 by Esquire Inc., this is the May 1960 edition of Coronet Magazine. Coronet Magazine was similar in content and layout to Readers Digest, and with generally the same type of contents and features, including a condensed book section. This particular issue includes an 8-page article on MAD Magazine, and this article is one of the earliest articles ever written about MAD. This issue has been well read, and at over 60 years old, is still in Excellent display condition.

Price realized: $48

Lot #132 - Screwball / A MAD MAD Game Unlicensed 1960 Transogram MB $20

Here’s a cool piece of unlicensed MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1960 by the Transogram Corp., this is the revised edition of the Screwball board game. The first edition of this board game featured a full likeness of Alfred E. Neuman on the front, along with three (3) MADs. After MAD Magazine objected to the box cover art, one of the MADs was removed, a microphone was placed in front of the characters mouth (to hide the missing tooth), and the word “Screwball” was enlarged. No changes were made to the game board, playing pieces, or instructions. This is one of the earliest unlicensed pieces of MAD Magazine memorabilia, because in 1960, the popularity of MAD Magazine was skyrocketing, and people wanted to cash in on the craze. This item is complete, with no missing pieces, and is in wonderful display condition. One of the sides of the box lid has split, however.

Lot #134 - 1960's Alfred E. Neuman Small Ceramic Bust w/ Original Shipping Box MB $200

Here's a super rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in the early 1960's by Contemporary Ceramics out of Chatham, New Jersey, this is the small (3 ¾”) version of the Alfred E. Neuman ceramic bisque bust. These busts were initially offered for sale in issue #53 (1960), and were sold in both a large and small version. This bust is the smaller of the two. The bust is beautiful, with white bisque and no cracks on the base. The manufacturers sticker is missing from the bottom, however. While these busts are frequently seen for sale on various websites, this particular bust also has its original shipping box included. The vast majority of the original mailing label is missing, although a tiny bit is still attached to the box.

Lot #135 - The Newman E. Alfred Tuscaloosa Brass Band 45 rpm Record MB $45

This is a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in the 1960's by Low-Rico Music, this is a 45 rpm record featuring the hit song, "What? Me Worry". This song was recorded by the Newman E. Alfred Tuscaloosa Brass Band, and the "B" side is the equally famous hit, "Remembering". I have not played either side of the record, so I cannot tell you what these songs sound like. Nor do I have any information about the band. They were probably just a bunch of kids playing around in Daddy's recording studio. The record appears to be unplayed, and the generic paper sleeve is in VF condition.

Lot #136 - MAD Magazine / The Sweet Sick-Teens 45 RPM Record RARE 1962 MB $20

Here's a vintage piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1962 by RCA Victor, this is a MAD Magazine 45 rpm record. The two songs on the record, "Agnes", and "The Pretzel", were also found on the MAD Twists Rock N' Roll LP. But, since RCA Victor decided not to release any other material, they were then included on the MAD Twists.... LP. I have not played this record, so I do not know how it sounds. But, it is in Excellent display condition, with a generic paper sleeve. This is the 45 RPM version. This record is very difficult to find, so don't miss out!

Lot #137 - Alfred E. Neuman Cloth Patch Factory Sealed 1970's RARE MB $10

Here's a cool piece of Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Originally produced in the 1970's by Gandalf Products, this is an Alfred E. Neuman cloth patch. Gandalf Products sold several different styles of cloth patches, from Looney Tunes and Disney characters to popular comic book characters, like Batman and Superman. This is their take on Alfred E. Neuman. These patches weren't sold in stores, rather they appeared in advertisements on the inside of 1970's comic books. This patch measures approx. 2 7/8" by 3", and is unused and in Excellent display condition, and still is sealed in its original plastic sleeve. The patches that didn’t sell were later sold to Diwan Enterprises, a British clearing house where this is from.

Here's a rare piece of MAD Magazine and Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Produced in 2018 by Marc Jacobs, this is a MAD Magazine hooded sweatshirt. This sweatshirt was offered for sale on the Marc Jacobs website, and was a rather slow seller. It features an embroidered Alfred E. Neuman on the front left breast, and the back features the name “Marc” in the MAD Magazine logo font. Other MAD items produced for the Marc Jacobs line include a cap, a pair of pinback buttons (see Lot #133), and a pair of socks (see Lot #91). This sweatshirt is an Adult size Extra-Large (XL), and it is unused, and in Mint condition. It even comes in its original Marc Jacobs storage bag.

Lot #139 - MAD Magazine / How To Be A Successful Dog Paperback Book Turkish MB $20

Here’s a super rare piece of foreign MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 1999 by Aksoy Yayincilik, this is the Turkish version of the MAD Magazine paperback book, How To Be A Successful Dog. This title was originally published in 1984 in the USA, then reissued in 1999 with a different cover and a digest-sized format. This is the Turkish version of the digest-sized format. Since I don’t understand one syllable of the Turkish language, I can only assume that this book has been fully translated from English to Turkish. This book has been previously enjoyed, but is still in Excellent display condition, with a foil sticker on the back.

Lot #140 - Swedish MAD Magazine Paperback Book Don Martin Unreleased Rare MB $75

Here’s another super rare piece of foreign MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 1988 by Semic Press AB, this is the Swedish version of the MAD Magazine paperback book, MAD’s Don Martin Bounces Back. The complete set of Swedish MAD paperback books numbers a total of 92, not including reprints. This book is number 92 in the set, but strangely enough, it was never released. The reason is because when Don Martin left MAD in 1987, there would have been some legal entanglements in releasing any Don Martin material for sale. So, even though the books were already printed, they could not be sold. This is one of the surviving unsold copies, and it is in Excellent display condition, with light storage and handling wear.

Price realized: $75

Lot #141 - MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman Premium Pin Color Scheme Prototype MB $75

Here's a super rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1990 by Brian Fitterman, this lot contains an Alfred E. Neuman premium pin face. Back in 1993, MAD Magazine enclosed a readership survey in issue 326, and anyone who responded received an Alfred E. Neuman cloisonne pin in return. The pin that all the respondents received had an Alfred E. Neuman face with black and white enamel. The pin face that is shown here was one of the color scheme options, and shows Alfred with brown hair and a tan face. There were a few of each of these made, but they are scarce and very hard to find. This auction is just for the face of the pin. There is no pin attached. This pin face has also been attached to a gold-colored metal plate. It is gold-colored on both sides, but the camera angle makes the gold-colored plate look a bit darker. The front is just as bright and shiny as the back (shown in the second photo).

Lot #143 - MAD Magazine / The Dellwoods 45 RPM Record RARE 1964 MB $20

Here's a vintage piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1963 by Big Top, this is a MAD Magazine 45 rpm record. The two songs on the record, "Her Mustache", and "Don’t Put Onions On Your Hamburger", were also found on the Fink Along With MAD LP. I have not played this record, so I do not know how it sounds. But, it is in Excellent display condition, with a generic paper sleeve. This is the 45 RPM version. This record is very difficult to find, so don't miss out!

Price realized: $20

Lot #144 - MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman Mardi-Gras Walkalong Costume 1960 MB $1250

Here’s one of MAD Magazine collecting’s biggest “Holy Grails”. Produced in 1960 by Collegeville Costumes, this is the Adult size Alfred E. Neuman Mardi-Gras walk-along Halloween costume. The Adult would slip into the costume from the bottom skirt, and slip the costume over their body. The eye holes are in the hairline of Alfred’s head, immediately below the edge of the green hat. The face of Alfred is that of a court jester, which makes sense since this is a Mardi Gras costume. The costume itself (including the skirt) measures approx. 41” long, and is approx. 20” wide. The plastic face shows some cracks and light splits, and the cloth skirt shows rubbing wear. It has also become unstitched along the seam in a few areas. It is remarkable how much the skirt is still attached, however, as it seems that the skirt was able to be pulled away from the costume quite easily, especially if a larger sized Adult wore it a few times. In Collectibly MAD, it is noted that there might have been a box included with the costume. In all actuality, this item was sold with a removable hanger attached to it. Although I have not specifically seen an Alfred E. Neuman Mardi Gras costume with an attached hanger, I have seen other Collegeville walk-along costumes with the hangers attached. Overall, this costume would certainly be the Holy Grail piece of most MAD Magazine memorabilia collections, and the opening bid reflects both the scarcity and condition of this piece. As far as I know, less than ten (10) of these are known to exist.

Lot #145 - Collection Of Chinese (Taiwan) MAD Magazine Memorabilia Issue #4, Envelope MB $75

The items in this lot include the following: Issue #4 of the Chinese MAD, an original Chinese MAD mailing envelope, a full color Alfred E. Neuman poster, and a Chinese MAD subscription form. The magazine, subscription form, and envelope appear to be gently used, and are in Excellent display condition. The poster does show some storage and handling wear, with light creasing and bends along the edges and corners. Any of the six (6) issues of the Chinese MAD are very difficult to find, and the issue #4 found in this auction is no different.

Lot #146 - 1977 MAD Magazine Wall Calendar w/ Original Storage Envelope RARE MB $15

Here's a rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1976 by Warner Books, this is the 1977 MAD Magazine wall calendar. Generally speaking, the top half of each monthly calendar page features panel art from previously published issues of MAD, and feature art from your favorite MAD Magazine artists, like Jack Davis, Dave Berg, Paul Coker, Sergio Aragones, and a host of others. The numbered days also have tidbits of MAD Magazine art sprinkled in as well. And, the centerfold features a full color version of one of those “Cheap, Crummy, Souvenir posters from MAD Magazine” premiums. This calendar is unused, and is in Near Mint condition, with light storage and handling wear. And as an added bonus, the original storage envelope is also included. In my opinion, the envelope is rarer than the calendar itself.

Lot #147 - The New Republic January 1966 w/ The MAD Show review Scarce MB $5

Here’s an obscure piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 1966 by The New Republic, this is the January 29, 1966 edition of The New Republic magazine. Generally speaking, The New Republic is a magazine that prints opinions on politics, the arts, and culture. This specific issue has a review of the popular, off-Broadway hit, The MAD Show, and apparently the reviewer didn’t really enjoy it, as he compared The MAD Show to “eating soda crackers which have been softened in milk”. This issue is in decent display condition, with light edge browning and corner creasing. There is also a bit of edge chipping on both the front and back covers.

Here’s a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 1964 by Esquire Inc., this is the August 1964 edition of Esquire Magazine. Normally, any issue of Esquire would be of no value to a MAD Magazine memorabilia collector. But, this issue is valuable to MAD Magazine memorabilia collectors, as it contains the famous MAD Magazine parody. This issue spoofs the MAD Letters Page, shows Alfred E. Neuman in an article about “Real Problems”, takes a swipe at a MAD Magazine “How To….” article, and parodies the cover of MAD, calling it “BAD” instead. This issue has been previously enjoyed, but it is in Excellent display condition.

The poster and flyer feature identical artwork, which depicts Mr. Davis in various activities during the famous MAD Trips abroad. Measuring approx. 5 ½” by 8 ½” and 11” by 17” respectively, these pieces are unused, and in Near Mint condition, with ultra-light storage and handling wear.

This is the VHS tape version, and was probably the only version produced for the British audience. As an added reference, this item makes no mention anywhere of MAD Magazine anywhere on the tape or case, EXCEPT in small letters that appear in the credits, located just under Barbara Bach’s right elbow, on the back of the case (see Picture #3). Lot #162 - MAD Magazine # 104 Signed By Jerry DeFuccio RARE 1966 MB $10

Here’s a rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 1966 by E.C. Publications, this is issue #104 of MAD Magazine. But, what makes this item special is that it has been signed by the late, former associate editor of MAD Magazine, Mr. Jerry DeFuccio. This issue was sent to a gentleman named Win, who was eager to contribute to MAD Magazine as either an artist or writer. Apparently, Win had sent samples of his work to MAD, and Mr. DeFuccio had kept the samples for review. I haven’t the time to research if Win was finally hired as a free-lance contributor, and maybe there is a chance that he was hired, if only for a brief time. In any event, this issue has been signed by Mr. DeFuccio on the front cover in black marker, and is in Excellent display condition, with surface, corner, and edge wear. There is a ½” split at the bottom of the spine, and the back cover shows some tiny pieces missing from each corner and the bottom edge.
