Saturday, October 1, 2005 We were a few months off in our prediction for finishing this project by October 2nd. The periods when our contractors have been active have generated some beautiful results that we continue to be excited about, but the stretches in between these bursts of creativity have followed a timeline of their own devising. Taking the place of the frustration that comes from not being into the house as planned is the fun we're having reveling in each new detail as it comes about. Unlike every other project that we have been a part of as a floor covering business, in which time seems to always be the enemy, we are not shouldering that burden and can allow the contractors to take the time they need to do some special things that don't get done everyday. And in that context, eight to ten weeks of delay means nothing when the finished product is becoming something beyond our dreams. Dan set some boards for us to picture the driveway access. With our slender approach into the garage the question is where to pour a side pad to make it easiest to turn around within the limits of the property's width. As we scratch our heads over that one, Steve is finishing his crown, stair and wainscotting detail. We continue to hope Matt's cabinetry is right around the corner. Sunday, October 9, 2005 Not much happened this week. Steve put the finishing touches on his masterful trim artwork and has gone as far as he can go until cabinets go in. Dan staked out the driveway shape but we all agree he should pour the majority of it after some of the other contractors have had their turn at being as messy as they want to be. Along with my folks, good family friends Mike and Aggie visited Sunday to match reality with the internet images they've been following from this site. Come and visit and get your picture online. Friday, October 21, 2005 At a Chinese food restaurant in Sandy this evening I broke open my fortune cookie and read this message: "Happy events will take place shortly in your home." We don't know if that means cabinets are right around the corner, but at this point we're grabbing on to any signs that Matt is somewhere in our future. Joy continues to play with wallpaper books, carpet samples and pieces of tile, changing her mind day to day. Low evening winter light casts dramatic shadows on Mt. Hood's face. Sunday, October 30, 2005 Steve and Joy created some more stuff to do in the house on Friday with the addition of master bedroom chair rail. Running around the room at about 40 inches this will serve as a line between wallpaper and paint. It's also extending out of the master into the upper hall and down the stairs into the stairwell to break up that big space a bit. Today Joy and I tried to reclaim part of the hillside from the ravages of blackberry vines. She has so much energy after what she's been through, it's amazing. Continue on to November |
