Thank you for everything, Mr. Jaffee. Your Fold-Ins warped my mind well before my MAD readership began (at age 14).
In the summer of ‘87, a female high school classmate came to visit and she was utterly fascinated with your Fold-Ins; I even made her a Fold-In card for her 15th birthday. We lost her in 1994 (to a car accident) but I’m glad she and I got to share in your artistic genius for even a short time.
May your 100th birthday celebrations be full of reminders of how much you have reached us all with your wonderful, unique humour and satire.
Greetings from Atlantic Canada! |

Happy birthday to my dearest friend. |
David P. Levin |
Q: HOW DID YOU MAKE IT TO 100, MR. JAFFEE?
A: Must have been the daily regimen of whiskey, onion rings, glazed donuts and unfiltered CAMELs that I’ve followed since age 11.
A: Finally wising up and quitting said daily regimen at age 97.
A: Just kidding! I didn’t give all that stuff up until I was 99 1/2!

Here we go with another ridiculous birthday wish to Al Jaffee! I've been with You and the rest of The Usual Gang of Idiots since MAD #210. Thank you for all your contributions to the MAD community. Have a nice one. |

Happy Birthday greetings from Australia! Your mad inventions lit a fire when I was young that probably warped my problem solving abilities to this day. So glad that you have joined the centenarian club. Enjoy! |
Sam Parker |
A happy birthday to you Mr. Jaffee. You're one of the best original artists of MAD Magazine and have been for so long. We've all been blessed to have read and laughed with glee at your work. A happy birthday to you sir. |
Robert Swords |
Happy Birthday Al! You were such a major part of my formative years. You showed that humor is everywhere, and for this I thank you. |
Daniel DiPaola |
Mr Jaffee,
Happy birthday to you. I am very grateful for all the humor you brought to my world. I started reading Mad in about 1972 when I was about 10 and then started collecting them, looking for older issues, getting a subscription. I sold them when I went away to college, a decision I deeply regretted later on. About 5 years ago, I realized I could get many on eBay and I started buying them all those classic issues from #24 through the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. I particularly love your material, the fold-ins, hawks and doves and crazy articles like the the Great Cigarette Filter Tip War, A Mad Look at Computers, and of course all the fold-ins.
Thank you for all the laughs over many decades. |
Zack Urlocker |
Happy 100th birthday Mr. Jaffee!

Al Jaffee turns 100! If we fold him in will he then be 50? I think it's worth a shot! Happiest of birthdays to you, Al - we are so thankful for how your work touched our lives! |
Alan Bernstein |
Happy centennial, Al! If I myself spent a hundred years at it even then I couldn't thanks you and the rest of the idiots enough for the 68 years of mind-bending MADness you've all given us and for warping my view of the world from a crucially young adolescent age! Thank you! |
Casey Killingsworth |
Q: Say, doesn't it feel INCREDIBLE to have made it to ONE HUNDRED years, Mr. Jaffee?
A: No, it's COMMON in our FAMILY. My AUNT always said she AGED ten years with every STUPID QUESTION we made, so when she passed away she was AT LEAST 40,000 YEARS OLD!
A: Not especially, every day I take a WALK at the beach and see TENS OF THOUSANDS of ROCKS and PEBBLES, some of which are MILLIONS OF YEARS old! You should go and ask THEM as well!
A: No, ANY schmuck or sissy could do it TOO! But must people CHOOSE to GIVE UP LIVING much in advance, without ANY REASON!

Al - You opened my eyes at a very young age; you & your colleagues gave me a healthy(?) sense of irreverence before I even had a sense of reverence. My eyebrow has been permanently arched ever since, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you for corrupting me. Happy 100th! |

Happy birthday, Al! Thank you for warping my impressionable young mind. |

I know Al Jaffee (pronounced 'Finch') is the master of using space to its fullest, so he'd probably be able to fold all my appreciation of his century of wit and artistry into a couple of snappy sentences. Cos I sure as *&$% can't. |
Jonathan Sloman |
| Happy Birthday Mr. Jaffee,
Your 100th birthday celebration is cause for remembering the amazing group of people who made Mad Magazine. I have vivid memories of visiting my father, John Putnam, at the office in 1960s and 70s and getting the opportunity to meet you and many of the other members of the, “Usual Gang of Idiots.”
I also remember my father sharing photographs of the unbelievable trips that you guys took together to exotic places. I admit that I was somewhat jealous of his family, but you guys took care of him.
I (sent you) some photographs and art works from a 1976 party his Mad family threw for him. I hope they bring back some fond memories of the camaraderie and creativity of your colleagues. I only wish they were around to roast and celebrate you in a similar fashion on this the occasion of your 100th birthday. |
|
Robert Putnam |
Al,
What a gift to the world you are. You were blessed with a brilliant mind and an uncanny ability to let what's in it spill out onto the canvas so we can all get a glimpse of what goes on in that head of yours.
A miraculous theme park of gadgets and gags. Full of stupid people asking endless stupid questions while getting cut off at the knees by folks not afraid to say what we are all thinking. How kind of you, by the way, to leave a blank space for us to chime in as well.
Needless to say, I'm thankful for so many opportunities to tour that park on the pages of MAD Magazine. It's a place I could spend forever in. There is always joy there. Brilliance on display and true genius. You have made your mark on this world and left an indelible impression on my heart and mind. I will be forever grateful for your contribution to my life.
Love, ya, Al. I feel like you're one of my best friends. |
JJ Brent |
What can one say to a master of cartoon art? Well, one can start by saying "Thank you" for all the A-ONE Laughter you've given us over so many years! I, myself am very lucky to have known you, and have had conversations with you over the years! You are a gentleman of the highest caliber, Al. May God Bless you! |
Tom Stemmle |
I grew up with him. |

Mr. Jaffee, you have brought enormous happiness and enjoyment to countless people in your many years! There is no greater act of love towards others than to try to bring happiness into their world. You have succeeded beyond anyone's dreams and may all this love return to you on your birthday! |
Lindsay Cohen |
Dear Mr Jaffee, I just did the fold-in and see you're turning 10. Congratulations and Happy birthday! |
@WilhelmKurtz |
I can't begin to express how much of an influence Al Jaffee's work had on me as I grew up. The Mad Book of Mad Magic, and of course Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions were the ones I remember going to many times. Happy birthday to the master. |

It was Sunday, March 13, 1921). The US president was Warren G. Harding (Republican), the UK Prime Minister was David Lloyd George (Liberal). Famous people born on this day include Al Jaffee. The Nut, directed by Theodore Reed, was one of the most viewed movies released in 1921. I remembered because I too am a March 13 birthday boy, and I was following Al when he turned 99. I wish Al all the best. Thanks for all the antastic fart. I mean thanks for the fantastic art. |

I am hoping the MAD fold-OUT collage-card I created makes its way to Al in celebration of his 100th birthday! I poured love into it to celebrate the man who so cleverly entertained us all for more decades than many get to walk the earth, and so that for a moment he may again remember my beloved grandfather, John F. Putnam, his MAD colleague 1954-1980. Happy 100th birthday, Al!
|
Jennifer Allard-O'Brien |
Al Jaffee is one of my earliest comedy influences. I discovered a stack of my uncle’s old Mads at my grandparents house when I was just eight years old and I was hooked. The fold-ins were one of those things that hooked me along with a book of Al Jaffee’s inventions. I can thank him enough for helping me find my path as a comedy writer and creator. |
Danny Gallagher |
Been loving your good work for ages. You inspire a generation of artists. Happy birthday, Al. |
Robert Edmond |
Happy Birthday Al. Thank you for helping to raise me to be the twisted person I am. My Dad subscribed to Mad for decades and I think you and the team rubbed off on our family in a big way - wheeeee-sploink! |

Luís Marcelo Silva |
Happy Birthday, Al! You've brought so many smiles to countless people around the world. Here's to 100 more!!! |
Joel Goldfoot |
Happy birthday Al. I’ve been a reader of MAD magazines since I was 9, in 1962. I still subscribe and read them year around. MAD is the best magazine ever to chronicle the passage of time and cultural changes. I have saved and schlepped my collection of MADs thru the years so my mom wouldn’t throw them out when I went away to college or my wife wouldn’t throw them out during a cleaning spree. They are a cherished possession. You and the other gang of idiots are such a gift, a mensch, to the world. My mom just turned 99, and she remembers me hunkered over my MADs at the dinner table and just snorting and chuckling at the humor. Love to you and thanks for the many many many many happy memories. |
Ron Cohn |
CHEERS and The Happiest of Birthdays to one of my MAD idols! Thank you AL JAFFEE —your tremendous contribution to American humor is tremendously appreciated!! |

| Here is my (attempted) fold-in for Al’s 100th birthday. Sorry the paper’s a little damaged. Al, if you’re reading this, I just want to say thank you so much for inspiring me and so many other people. You probably don’t have a lot of 14-year old fans, do you? Well, I’m 14 and I’m a BIGGGG fan of your work! I know that my fold-in is far from good, but I really want to be a cartoonist and I’m trying to improve my skills all the time! Thanks for the inspiration, amazing art, and clever jokes, and here’s to another 100 years! |

Have a wonderful birthday celebration, my friend! |

Dear Mr Jaffee - I was delighted to converse with you beside the elevator in 1998, when DC/MAD had offices on Broadway and I was in NY trying to rekindle MAD in Britain. I'm still kicking myself for not making more of this contact. Of course, you will remember this meeting, while I don't. Very many happies, and here's to the next 100. Very best wishes... |

Stupid Question: Mr. Jaffee, are you happy to have lived to be 100 years old?
Snappy Answer #1: If I have to actually talk to you and respond to that I suppose I’d choose the alternative!

Snappy Answer #3: Where’s the bathroom, don’t you need to go?! |

| MAD wishes it had a super snappy birthday greeting for Al Jaffee, but that’s Al’s department.
Guinness World Record holder for “the longest career as a comic artist," the longest serving member of our beloved Usual Gang of Idiots and now MAD's first Centenarian, Al Jaffee is one of a kind. He created the fan favorite Fold-In, crafted countless snappy answers, and thought up inventive inventions we wanted in real life. For six and a half decades Al has been beloved by generations of MAD Readers (and some of their parents, some of their parent's parents, and maybe even some Neanderthals) from around the world.
So, from all of us here at MAD (and MAD minds everywhere), Happy 100th Birthday AL JAFFEE. MAD wouldn't be MAD without you!
