Lot #38 - German MAD Magazine Bound Volume #4 Mid-1970's Ultra-Rare MB $75

Here’s another super rare piece of foreign MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in the 1970’s by Williams Forlags AB, this is a bound volume of three (3) early issues from the German version of MAD Magazine. Upon discovering that there were several unsold issues of the German MAD being returned, the publishers of the German MAD had the idea of repackaging those early issues into a bound volume, at a rate of three (3) issues per volume. This item is the fourth German MAD bound volume produced, and contains issues 10, 11, and 12. The issues are complete issues, and also include the covers. Early German MAD bound volumes are extremely tough to find (even in Germany), and this item is no exception. This item is in Excellent display condition (save for a few nicks and light stains on the front cover), while the issues inside appear to be unread. The opening bid reflects the scarcity and condition of this item.

Lot #45 - MAD Magazine Super RARE Export Edition #14 Late 1960’s MB $20

Here’s a super rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in the late 1960’s by Export Publications LTD., this item is issue #14 from the MAD Spanish Language (En Espanol) Export edition. This edition of MAD Magazine is not a foreign edition per se, but is rather a MAD Magazine that has been published in the USA, then exported to Spanish-speaking countries (mainly Mexico). I have also heard that this edition was also sold in the USA, but in cities with large Hispanic populations, like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. This is issue #14 in the series, and issues 13, 14, 15 and 16 are the only issues that have been accounted for. There has been no evidence or appearance of issues 1-12, or any issues after #16. This particular issue has certainly seen better days, as it shows surface, corner and edge wear, along with significant spine wear (with cover splits at both the top and bottom of the spine). There is also a small corner piece missing from the front cover, and a large ink stain also appears on the front cover, which gradually bleeds into the magazine about 5 pages. While not in the best condition, this issue is one of the rarest “foreign” issues to find, simply due to its scarcity. This issue is complete, but it is fragile, and would be best stored bagged and boarded. Wow!

Lot #48 - MAD Magazine #24 First Magazine Sized Issue 1955 MB $50

Here’s the one that started it all. Published in 1955 by E.C. Publications, this is MAD Magazine #24, the first magazine sized issue of MAD Magazine. The first twenty-three (23) issues of MAD were 10-cent comic books, and it took three (3) years for MAD to convert to a full-size humor magazine. While MAD #24 is not especially rare (they can be found, but can be expensive), this issue is on the lower end of the condition scale. This issue is complete, but shows surface, corner and edge wear. There is a grease pencil mark on the front cover (probably put there by the distributor), and there is a 1” tear at the bottom of the front cover. The magazine also has a little wave to it, which is prominent if you lay it flat. All in all, this issue is a great value at the opening bid, so if you’re looking for a less expensive issue that you can hold in your hands, this is it.

The oldest one, from 1975, shows the classic MAD Magazine logo on the front, along with a pre-paid 9 cent postage mark on the back. The second one, a misprint, is dated 1988, and is a Christmas gift renewal notification card. This is a unique card, however, as the text has been printed on the same side as the pre-paid postage mark. The third card was included loosely in the subscribers last issue and has an option for an 8-issue subscription to MAD for $13.75, 24 issues for $33.75, or 40 issues for $53.75. This card was sent by the Kings to the MAD Magazine offices during the Christmas holiday of 1985. MAD gave them permission to use the cover for their research, and they then, in turn, used the image for their annual Christmas card. Measuring approx. 3 ½” by 6 ⅞”, this item is in Excellent display condition. It has been signed by the Kings, and also comes in its original storage envelope. These stickers were used in the MAD Magazine offices, and were attached to folders, press kits, and other correspondence. They were also given away at trade shows and other media events. I have not unraveled the roll (and will not) to count the exact number of stickers present, but a good ballpark guess would be at least three hundred (300). The stickers measure approx. 2” by 2 3/4”, and all (except one) are still attached to the wax paper backing. There is one sticker missing from the outer ring, on the end. In Near Mint condition, with ultra-light storage and handling wear. From the collection of Joe Raiola.

So, in place of a Christmas party, a special Valentine's Day party was held instead. The date of the party on the mug is listed as February 9, 1994, but due to inclement weather, the party was cancelled and rescheduled at a later date. Here’s a unique piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Probably produced in the 2000’s, this item is a prototype for a MAD Magazine musical greeting card. This card contains a musical CD, which contains music recorded especially for the recipient. It seems to me that this would be a card given to a now ex-girlfriend, as the lyrics are a bit raunchy: “Oh Darlin’ it’s sad how you’re wantin’ be back, but all I can say is F+CK no!”, or, Ya’ drove me ta’ drink, so now you just drive me to the bar.” Needless to say, this item was not approved. This item contains an actual CD, but I have not played it. Alfred E. Neuman appears in the centerfold, while the words, “A Really MAD Greeting Card” are printed on the back. Cards like these were randomly inserted into packs of MAD Magazine Series I trading cards and the winner would then fill out their mailing address on the back of the card to redeem their prize, a “numbered, limited edition, MAD Magazine promo sheet”. I would assume most of these were redeemed when they were found (because, why not?), but there could also be more of these out there, considering the amount of still-factory sealed boxes of MAD Magazine Series I cards still floating around. In any event, this card is unused, and in Near Mint condition, with just a hint of storage and handling wear.

Lot #119 - Set of Sixty-Two (62) MAD Panic Fanzine Premium Pinback Buttons 2002 MB $200

Here's a cool lot of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 2002 by publisher, Ed Norris, this lot contains sixty-two (62) promotional pinback buttons from the MAD Magazine fanzine, The MAD Panic. The MAD Panic was a bi-monthly fanzine and was normally twelve (12) pages in length. It covered a variety of topics in the world of MAD Magazine, from recent MAD collectibles and early appearances of Alfred E. Neuman, to MAD Magazine news bits and a MAD Magazine collectors registry. Back in the early 2000’s, Mr. Norris had the bright idea of producing a set of pinback buttons, with each one featuring a different reproduced cover of the MAD Panic. He started selling them in sets of three (with two different sets offered each issue), beginning with Issue #62 (March 2001), and ending with Issue #71 (September 2002). This lot contains the complete set, with two (2) bonus color pinbacks also included. Sadly, the MAD Panic folded after Issue #71, so no further pinbacks were produced. Because of this, some of the covers are missing, as Mr. Norris chose the covers randomly. And each set was produced by the number of orders received, so there were no extras made. These pins measure approx. 2 ¼" in diameter, and are in Excellent display condition, with light foxing and surface scratches on the back.

Each issue borrows interior artwork from past issues of MAD, and the printed text in the world balloons has been translated into Spanish. There is chipping along all of the cover edges (both front and back), and there is also a bit of spine roll. While not in the best condition, this issue is complete, with no missing pages. Lot #122 - MAD Comic Book #2 Rare Canadian Version 1953 MB $125

Here’s a super rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 1953 by Superior Publishers LTD., this is the Canadian version of the EC / MAD Comic #2. I have nothing to compare it to, as I haven’t had any of the first 23 MAD comics in my collection for several years, and I don’t currently own either of the Russ Cochran MAD boxed sets. This issue appears to be in poor/fair condition, with significant surface, corner, and edge wear, edge chipping, spine wear, and a ½" by 3” piece missing from the upper right-hand corner of the front cover. On the good side, it is complete, and everything is still attached, but it is quite fragile.

Neuman statue that I had purchased at the Warner Brothers Studio Store, and he went to work. About three weeks later, this is what he created. This item was featured in an issue of the MAD Panic fanzine, and several more of these were made and sold. It measures 13" from fingertip to fingertip and is approx. 24" tall. It takes a AA battery (not included) and is in Excellent display condition. This item resides in New York City. Lot #209 - MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman Bust Salt and Pepper Shakers 1990’s MB $100

Here’s a couple pieces of some cool (but unlicensed) MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in the mid-1990's by a group out of the Pacific Northwest, this is a pair of Alfred E. Neuman bust salt and pepper shakers. The group who did these initially started by reproducing a large Alfred E. Neuman bust. The reproduced bust was a tad smaller than the original, was lighter in weight, and had red felt on the bottom instead of green. After they sold a few of the busts, they branched out and did a few pairs of these salt and pepper shakers. After that, they made a table top butane lighter, and a small table lamp, while still using the fake Alfred E. Neuman bust. In any event, these S/P shakers are a very cool display item. They measure approx. 5 3/8” tall, and both the top and bottom of the busts are glazed (Alfred’s head is white, the bases are black and grey). There is no felt on the bottom of either of these, rather there are rubber stoppers on the bottom to fill them with actual salt and pepper. The salt and pepper is then dispensed out of Alfred’s eyes and nostrils. These appear to have never been used, and are in Mint condition.

This item is in decent display condition, with surface, corner, and edge wear, and a small piece missing near the upper right-hand corner of the front cover. Here's a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1993 by Lime Rock International, this item is an unused “Instant Winner” card from the MAD Magazine Series II trading card set. Cards like these were randomly inserted into packs of MAD Magazine Series II trading cards and the winner would then fill out their mailing address on the back of the card to redeem their prize, a “numbered, limited edition, MAD Magazine press sheet”. I would assume most of these were redeemed when they were found (because, why not?), but there could also be more of these out there, considering the amount of still-factory sealed boxes of MAD Magazine Series II cards still floating around. In any event, this card is unused, and in Near Mint condition, with just a hint of storage and handling wear.

Lot #225 - MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman 45 RPM Record Radio Station Promo MB $35

Originally, this record was sold with a full color picture sleeve with artwork by Don Martin. But this is a rarer version of that record, as it is a white label promotional copy that was given away to radio DJ's. The two songs, Potrzebie & What - Me Worry, were allegedly recorded by Alfred E. Neuman and his Furshluginner Five, although I'm sure it was just a typical 1950's house band that did the job. I have not played this record, so I do not know how it sounds. But it is in Excellent display condition, with a paper sticker on each side of the record.

I was alerted to this collection in the Fall of 2012, just after the store removed these pieces from their windows. I inquired about them and purchased the collection for $100 (the opening bid). I brought them home, and determined they were just too damned big to display all together. So, I packed them up and they haven’t seen the light of day since. The boards range in size from 12” by 13 ¼" (smallest) to 23 ¾" by 42 ¼" (largest). All but two have a measurement exceeding 24” at some point. There are fourteen (14) word balloons as well. Eight (8) have been removed from their appropriate board, while the other six (6) are still attached. They are simply attached with clear tape on the back. The graphics are enlarged reprints of MAD Magazine’s “Jaws” parody, and feature caricatures of Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, and Robert Shaw. All of the pieces are a little dusty, but are in Excellent display condition. An additional shipping fee will be added to your invoice for this collection, but rates vary to different parts of the country. I will say anywhere between $50-$80.
