And, if you are unclear with any description (or have any questions), please ask before the night of the auction. I want to make sure you know EXACTLY what you are bidding on.

- The placing of a bid is an Agreement to Purchase, indicating that you agree to the above listed Terms and Conditions.

- This auction features a few consignments from some foreign MAD Magazine memorabilia collectors, and I want to thank them for their participation. Also, most of the items in this auction come from the estate of the late MAD Magazine memorabilia collector, Mr. Andrew Flint. Although I had never personally met Mr. Flint, he was an active bidder in my MAD telephone auctions in the late 1990's, and in the first couple auctions i had in 2016 and 2017. He also bought some MAD items from me on eBay as well. Rest in peace, my friend.

- Thanks again to Doug Gilford, who not only hosts the catalog on his fabulous website, but also takes the time to proofread my catalog files and re-assemble them on his website. Thank you, Doug!

- Lastly, I wish to apologize for the photos that have an annoying gray spot in them. If a gray spot appears in a photo, it's left of center and up a little bit. That gray spot DOES NOT appear on the item. I thinks it's a piece of schmutz inside the lens of my digital camera. Sorry.

Good Luck, and Happy Bidding!

MADly,

Tim Johnson

Here's a neat piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1971 by E.C. Publications, this is the "Shocking" MAD Flag bonus premium. This item appeared as a bonus premium in MAD Special #5, and is an interpretaion of the American Flag, with the stripes of the flag being the text of a parody of the Pledge of Allegiance. This item has been removed from the magazine (probably immediately after its purchase), and measures approx. 16 1/2" by 26 1/2" unfolded. It has been folded into 1/8's, and shows areas of tanning and light staining. There is wear and tape residue on the corners, with surface wear as well.

Here's a rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1996 by Liberty Check Printers, this item is a MAD Magazine vinyl checkbook cover. This item was released in 1996 along with a line of MAD Magazine paper checks, but distribution was limited only to members of credit unions. Because of that, this cover and the checks are rarely seen. The paper checks (not included) had images of Spy vs. Spy, Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions, and the cover art to issues 154, 211, 218, and 238. This particular checkbook cover is unused, and is in Mint condition.

This magazine was published mainly for amateur ham radio operators for buying and selling goods and equipment for their radio hobby. This magazine is sort of a "tribute" issue to MAD Magazine, as it features Alfred E. Neuman (Al Freddy Newham) on the front cover, as well as full page parodies of Don Martin, Spy vs. Spy, and Horrifying Cliches. This particular issue has been looked at just a few times, and is in decent display condition, with some edge damage at the top of the front cover, and a few pages after that.

Lot #17 - Scholastic Scope Magazine w/ MAD Magazine Article / Interview 1973 MB $10

Here's a rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 1973 by Scholastic Magazines Inc., this is the April 2, 1973 edition of Scholastic Scope. Scholastic Scope was published for the high-school age population, and was published weekly. This particular issue contains a six page article about MAD Magazine, and is complete with some cool pictures of the MAD staff in action at the office at 485 Madison Avenue. It appears that the cover became loose at some point, but was reattached with two small staples.

Lot #19 - Certified MAD Denim Bucket Hat Spencer Gifts 1999 MB $20

This item was sold exclusively in Spencer Gifts stores in 1999 and the early 2000's, and is unworn. In fact, it still has the Spencer Gifts price tag still attached to the hat. The tag on this 100% cotton hat says that it is. "One Size Fits All", but it is a little too small for a large-headed man like myself. In any case, this item is unused, and in Near Mint condition, with light storage handling and storage wear.

Lot #20 - MAD Magazine Memorabilia Auction Catalogs Lot 1996, 1997 MB $10

Here's a great set of old MAD Magazine memorabilia auction catalogs. Produced in 1996 and 1997 by MAD Magazine memorabilia collector, Michael Lerner, this lot contains two (2) different MAD Magazine memorabilia auction catalogs. This item measures approx. 5 1/2" by 7 1/4", and is in Excellent display condition. This hologram was originally marketed in 1994 by Lightrix, but it appears that a "Second Edition" was ordered, and produced in 1999.

Lot #23 - MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman Disguise Kit RARE Unopened MB $10

Here is a rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Manufactured in 1987 by Imagineering, this is a MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman disguise kit. The distribution for this item wasn’t necessarily the best, so while some parts of the USA enjoyed seeing these in stores, other parts of the country never knew this item even existed. When several of these kits were returned unsold, the company repackaged the ears included in the kit, and marketed them as Alfred Ears. Later in the early 1990’s, you could even see these in Halloween Express stores. This example is still factory sealed, and in near Near Mint condition, with light storage and handling wear.

Neuman message board on it.

Lot #26 - 1980's MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman Water Decal / Sticker MB $5

Here's a cool piece of Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Probably produced in the 1980's, this is an Alfred E. Neuman water decal. I don't believe this decal was licensed by MAD Magazine, although it appears to be the exact image of Alfred E. Neuman that appears on the MAD Magazine / NASH skateboards that were produced in 1987. Measuring approx. approx. 6 1/8" by 6 3/8", this item is unused, and is in Excellent display condition.

Lot #29 - MAD Magazine Wall Calendar Subscription Premium 1997 MB $5

Here's a cool MAD Magazine subscription premium. Produced in 1997 by E.C. Publications, this item is a MAD Magazine wall calendar. This item was produced as a subscription premium, and was given away to people who subscribed or re-subscribed to MAD Magazine. Measuring approx. 17" by 22", this item features reprints of various vintage MAD Magazine covers (between the publication years of 1952 and 1997), and is in Excellent display condition. While one would think that this is a 50th anniversary calendar, it isn't. If you do the simple math, it's only 45 years of stupidity, not 50. Therein lies the joke.

Lot #30 - MAD Magazine Business Card John Putnam / Art Director RARE MB $25

Here's a super rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in the 1970's by E.C. Publications, this is a business card from the long-time Art Director of MAD Magazine, Mr. John Putnam. It measures approx. 8 1/2" by 11", and is in Excellent display condition.

Lot #32 - MAD Magazine / Alfred E Neuman Paper Mask San Diego Comic Con 2010 MB $5

Here's a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 2010 for E.C. Publications, this is an Alfred E. Neuman paper mask. This mask was produced as a promotional item for MAD - The Animated Series TV show, and was originally part of an 11" by 17" promotional poster. But, because the perforations around the mask were so thin, the masks became easily detached from the paper poster. This particular mask measures approx. 9 3/8" by 9 1/2", and is unused and in Mint condition. The original flexible string is still attached as well.

Lot #33 - 1995 MAD Magazine Licensing Sheet Warner Bros. Consumer Products MB $5

Here’s a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1995 by E.C. Publications and Warner Brothers Consumer Products, this is a MAD Magazine licensing sheet. Here's a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in the 2000's by Sign Of The Times, this is a MAD Magazine collectible metal sign. This particular sign features the cover art to MAD Magazine #118, and has been stored in its original plastic cover. The plastic cover has been opened at the bottom, and I am sure the sign has been removed at some point. But the sign is in wonderful display condition. This sign measures approx. 12" by 15".

Lot #36 - MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman Leather Belt w/ Buckle 1993 MB $20

This is a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1993 by E.C. Publications, this is a MAD Magazine / Alfred E. Neuman leather belt w/ buckle. This belt was sold exclusively at the Warner Brothers Studio Stores from 1993 to 1996, and the face of Alfred is identical to the Alfred face that appears on the Alfred E. Neuman medallion, which was also sold at the Warner Brothers Studio Stores. This belt is one of several pieces of MAD Magazine memorabilia produced for sale at the Warner Brothers Studios Stores, with others being a denim jacket, a sweatshirt, a metal money clip, a statue, a puzzle, and a wristwatch, just to name a few. One shaker (unspecified) is the upper torso of Alfred E. Neuman, while the other shaker is the "What - Me Worry" base. As stated before, these shakers are not specified as either "salt" or "pepper", so you can use them as you please. These shakers are unused, and in Mint condition, and appear to have been taken out of the box just once (to photograph them). They measure approx. 4 1/2" from the bottom of the base to the top of Alfred's head, and approx. 4" from fingertip to fingertip.

Lot #38 - Pre-MAD / Alfred E. Neuman "Birds & The Bees" Poster 1950's MB $10

Here's a cool piece of early Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Probably produced in the 1950's, this item is a novelty poster featuring an early image of MAD Magazine's cover boy, Alfred E. Neuman. The image of Alfred on this poster was used several times before by other manufacturers, with most using the words, "What - Me Worry" as the text printed underneath the Alfred E. Neuman image. In fact, the company that made this poster also made a "What - Me Worry" poster at the same time as this one. This poster has been printed on heavy stock card paper, and is in decent display condition, with some browning and yellowing, edge and corner dings, sone light water stains, and a pinhole in the center (about 1 1/2" from the top). It measures approx. 8 3/4" by 11".

Here's a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in the 1980's by E.C. Publications, this is an Alfred E. Neuman color portrait. But, what makes this item special is that it has been signed at the top by the former General Manager of MAD Magazine, Annie Gaines. Annie was also the wife of the late founder and publisher of MAD Magazine, Mr. William (Bill) M. Gaines. This color portrait is in Excellent display condition, save for the fact of the Alfred E. Neuman scribble above Alfred's left shoulder. It measures approx. 7" by 10". From the collection of Andrew Flint.

Lot #40 - Collection Of Four (4) MAD Paperback Books w/ School Library Stickers MB $5

Here's a rare collection of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's by Signet Books and Warner Books, this is a collection of four (4) different MAD Magazine paperback books. Normally, these books wouldn't really cause a ruckus, and could easily be found on eBay for a couple of bucks apiece. But, what makes these particular books special is that they have a special library sticker attached to them. These books were offered for rental usage in the Hennepin County (Minn.) Here's a cool set of MAD Magazines. Published in 1997 by E.C. Publications, this lot contains four (4) copies of MAD Magazine #359. But what makes each of these issues special is the fact that each issue has a different Batman-related cover. And more than that, when you arrange the issue covers in a certain way, the words, "CHEAP GIMMICK", are spelled out in the border of the issues. Individually, some of these issues are easier to find more than others, with the more expensive ones selling for more than the opening bid for this lot. These issues appear to be unread and are in Near Mint condition.

Here’s a cool piece of Spy vs. Spy memorabilia. Produced in 1994 by Dionysus Records, this is a 45 rpm record from the band, The Boardwalkers. The Boardwalkers were a surf instrumental band that started in 1989. Side “A” of this record features the hit single, Spy vs. Spy, while the “B” side has the song, “Boardwalker”. The record sleeve is the real value of this, however, as it features an unauthorized use of the MAD Magazine characters, Spy vs. Spy. I am not sure if the record has been played, but it appears that both the record and sleeve are both in Excellent display condition.

Lot #54 - Spanish MAD Magazine Super RARE Export Edition #14 Late 1960's MB $30

Here's a super rare piece of foreign MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in the late 1960's by Export Publications LTD., this item is issue #14 from the MAD Spanish Language (En Espanol) Export edition. This edition of MAD Magazine is not a foreign edition per se, but is rather a MAD Magazine that has been published in the USA, then exported to Spanish-speaking countries (mainly Mexico). I have also heard that this edition was also sold in the USA, but in cities with large Hispanic populations, like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. This is issue #14 in the series, and issues 13, 14, 15 and 16 are the only issues that have been accounted for. There has been no evidence or appearance of issues 1-12, or any issues after #16. This particular issue is in G/VG condition, with surface, corner, and edge wear. This issue is one of the rarest "foreign" issues to find, simply due to its scarcity.

Here's a rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Published in 1976 by Warner Books, this is a 5th printing of the MAD Magazine paperback book, Hopping MAD. Normally, this book wouldn't really cause a ruckus, and could easily be found on eBay for just a few dollars. But, what makes this particular book special is that it has a special library binding attached to it. Typically, the front and back covers are removed, and the book is glued into the hardcover binding. The front and back covers are then re-attached to the hardcover binding. This book was offered for rental usage in the late 1970's at the Anoka (Minn.) Senior High School Media Center, and several of the media center's stamps are shown on the interior pages. This book is in Excellent display condition, although there is some sticker residue and paper loss at the upper left hand corner of the front cover.

Lot #57 - The Death Of GROO Signed w/ Picture By Aragones Nick Meglin MB $30

Here's a cool piece of Sergio Aragones memorabilia. Published in 1987 by EPIC Comics, this is a First Printing of the trade paperback book, The Death Of GROO. GROO is a comic book character developed by MAD Magazine artist, Sergio Aragones, and one could argue that Mr. Aragones is as well known for GROO than he is for his work in MAD Magazine. In any event, the inside front cover of this book contains an illustration of the late MAD Magazine editor, Mr. Nick Meglin, and shows Mr. Meglin threatening GROO with a tennis racket. It has also been signed by Mr. Aragones, with the message: To Nick El Hermano De GROO! (Sergio!). The drawing and text is quite large (6 1/2" by 9"), and takes up the majority of the inside front cover. This book is in Excellent display condition, but shows some storage and handling wear along the top edge.

Here's a rare piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1995 by MAD Magazine memorabilia collector, Michael Lerner, this lot contains a MAD Magazine memorabilia "For Sale" catalog. Mr. Lerner was famous for conducting his MAD Magazine memorabilia auctions in the mid to late 1990's, but this is his stab at selling his overstock of MAD memorabilia outside of the confines of a telephone auction. This MAD memorabilia catalog once belonged to MAD Magazine memorabilia collector, Cisco Harland, and his address is written on the back of the catalog. It appears this catalog has been paged through just a few times, and is in Excellent display condition.

Lot #61 - MAD Magazine's Bill Gaines Signed Note October 8, 1982 RARE MB $20

Here's a cool piece of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1982, this item is a slip of paper that has a message signed by MAD Magazine's Bill Gaines. This piece of paper was found in a collection of MAD Magazine memorabilia that I had purchased, so I don't know the real history behind it. It is dated October 8, 1982 (10-8-82), and has a couple of staple holes at the upper left hand corner. The note says, "Please Sign & Return", so I'm thinking it was sent to one of MAD's artists or writers. This item measures approx. 4" by 6", and is in Excellent display condition, with a light (but elongated) corner crease.

Here's a super cool piece of Spy vs. Spy memorabilia. Produced in 1991 by the late MAD Magazine artist, Antonio Prohias, this is a postcard he created as a sort of 'First Day Cover". He stamped a trimmed pre-paid 19-cent US postcard with a purple stamp of the Black and White Spies, stamped his mailing address on the left edge of the postcard, then placed a mailing label in in the bottom right hand corner. But the real value is shown on the back of the postcard, where he sketched his popular Black Spy two times, each with a different facial pose. This is surely a cool collector's item, and it is in Excellent display condition. It measures approx. 2 7/8" by 5 1/8".

Lot #68 - Burger King Restaurant “To-Go” Bags w/ Mort Drucker Artwork RARE MB$ 10

Here’s a unique collection of MAD Magazine memorabilia. Produced in 1990 for Burger King Holdings Inc., this is a collection of Burger King restaurant carry-out bags. What makes these bags special is that the artwork found on the bags was drawn by MAD Magazine’s Mort Drucker. I am not sure of any promotion that Burger King had with Mr. Drucker, so maybe it was a regional thing? Anyway, there are four (4) different bags in this collection, with each bag having a different size capacity (4 pounds, 6 pounds, 12 pounds, and jumbo). The three smaller bags are unused and in Excellent display condition, with light storage and handling wear. There largest bag shows a little bit of use, but has been folded back into its original condition.

Wax Paper was a recording industry magazine that published news on forthcoming vinyl record releases from Warner Brothers' stable of recording artists. Issues of WAX were never sold on newsstands, but were distributed for free to employees of Warner Brothers and other recording industry professionals. This particular is the famous MAD Magazine parody issue, which contains cover artwork by the late MAD Magazine cover artist, Frank Kelly Freas. The WAX logo uses the familiar MAD Magazine logo font, and the Table of Contents closely resembles the same section in MAD. There's even a Ripley's Believe It Or Not, MAD-style parody on the inside back cover. This issue has been read, but is still in Excellent display condition, with some lower right corner damage throughout the issue, and lisght surface wear on the back cover.

Probably produced in the 1970's by MAD Magazine artist, Mr. Don "Duck" Edwing, this is a mailing envelope he sent to MAD Magazine Associate Editor, Mr. Nick Meglin. This mailing envelope is very cool, as Mr. Edwing added a large drawing of King Kong on the front of the envelope, complete with bricks, a building in the shape of the MAD Magazine logo, windows, and horrified onlookers. It appears that a small portion of the envelope has been clipped from the right end, as the letters "V" and "E" are missing from the word "Ave." in the address. I assume this color page has been taken from the MAD Style Guide and then framed. I cannot confirm this, however, as the Style Guide that I own does not have this page included. In any event, this piece is very cool, as it shows various pieces of merchandise that would be a good fit in the scheme of MAD Magazine and Alfred E. Neuman. This item has been placed into a frame for protection, and can easily be removed. I don't believe this book has ever been read, as the spine is nice and tight, and the book has just a hint of handling and storage wear. If this book was on display on a retail book shelf, you could not tell that it was 50 years old. It looks brand new.

It stands approx. 5" tall, and is in terrific display condition. The label does how some storage and handling wear, however. And, the fingerprints are part of the label art, to avoid any confusion.

Lot #105 - Sergio Aragones Photographic Poster Print 1965 RARE MB $20

Here's an obscure piece of Sergio Aragones memorabilia. Produced in 1965, this is a photographic print of a piece of art Sergio Aragones drew in March of 1965. I am not sure for which publication he drew this for, as MAD does not give him any artist credit for that time frame. I'm thinking it could be from a Mexican publication, as most of the legible text in the art is in Spanish. Who knows? In any event, this item is very unique, and is most likely one-of-a-kind. This item measures approx. 12 1/4" by 17 1/4", and is very tightly rolled. Because it is printed on heavy bond photograph paper, the edges show several teeny tears/nicks. There are also bends and creases at the corners, and a 2" tear near the upper left hand corned that has been repaired with white tape (on the back).

This item was sold through the pages of the Swedish MAD, and offers a 3-dimensional image of Alfred E. Neuman of the front. This item is very light and fragile, and has a clear, opaque finish in some areas. This item is in remarkably good display condition, considering its fragility and trip across the Atlantic Ocean. It is a little dusty, and has a few spots of white paint on it. There is also a small side piece missing from the lower right hand corner, and also a pin hole at the top. Despite the few condition flaws, this item is in Excellent display condition.

Here's a unique piece of MAD Magazine clothing. Probably produced in the 1990's, this is a sports jersey featuring MAD Magazine's Alfred E. Neuman on the front. The reason I say "sports" jersey is that I couldn't tell you if it was made for football or hockey. It's made from 100% mesh polyester, and is probably a size 2XL, or a size XL with room for shoulder pads. Although there is not a copyright year shown, the image on the front of the shirt is shown as an approved licensed image from the MAD Style Guide. This item is in Excellent display condition, with a few small areas of pilling on the mesh.

Here's a cool piece of Alfred E. Neuman memorabilia. Produced in the late 1960's by AA Sales, Inc. out of Seattle, this is an Alfred E. Neuman poster. This poster features a pre-MAD image of Alfred E. Neuman, and this poster uses the copyrighted image that was owned by Stuff & Wilson. If you recall, this image was part of a copyright infringement case against MAD in the 1960's, by the wife of Mr. Stuff. The case was overturned, as it was discovered that Mrs. Stuff failed to protect the copyright of Alfred's image when other publishers tried to borrow or use the image. AA Sales also produced the flocked color poster of Alfred E. Neuman, but this is the first time I have ever seen this b/w version. This poster is quite large, and measures approx. 23" by 35". A Swedish MAD paperback book is also shown in the first photo, for size comparison only. It is not included in this auction. This poster shows light browning, and several small tears and creases along the corners and edges. And, there is also a 5" tear at the top that has been repaired with clear tape on the back. If framed correctly, those edge defects would probably not be seen.

Produced in 2022 by the Shadow Puppet Brewing Company out of Livermore, California, this is a four-pack of sealed cans of their Liver Moron IPA (India Pale Ale). Of importance to MAD Magazine memorabilia collectors is the unauthorized use of Alfred E. Neuman on the front of the cans. Proceeds from the sale of this IPA went to benefit the Alameda County Community Food Bank, and although this IPA was canned in 2022, it is still probably fit to drink. But I probably wouldn't. Each of these cans are full, and still factory sealed. The black plastic cap to hold all four cans together is still attached as well.
